“A few years ago, my daughter and I drove to Maquoketa, Iowa, to visit the art gallery of the wonderful painter, Rose Frantzen, who was a classmate of mine in art school back in Chicago. As soon as we pulled up to the gallery, we both started taking photos of the old mill across the street. This watercolor is the result of that moment; the slanting sunlight brought the composition to life. I didn’t find out until after I finished this painting that the Mitchell-Maskrey Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although this is a specific place, I like the fact that it resembles a million other small-town America locations.” -Steven Kozar
