“This is one of the two regal lion sculptures that reside on either side of the stairway leading up to the entrance of the Chicago Art Institute. I was walking around downtown Chicago early on a spring morning when I came upon this composition. The early morning sun was bouncing off the buildings on the opposite side of Michigan Avenue, casting this wonderful, dappled light onto the building’s entrance. I have fond memories of this great art museum-I have visited many times since I was a boy. It would not be an exaggeration to say that my decision to pursue the life of an artist was partly inspired by viewing the paintings displayed in this building. It was a real pleasure to pay homage to this art museum by creating this watercolor. But, like most of my paintings, the real subject matter is the amazing quality of light I found at that moment.” -Steven Kozar
