“In a bygone era, this was an elaborate and modern sign, welcoming weary travelers; now it’s a sad reminder of the passage of time. This scene is on the southeast side of Madison, just off a major thoroughfare. I was driving around Madison in the late afternoon, thinking about locations to photograph in the dramatic last light of day; I recalled this location just in time to get there as the sun was setting. I’ve always enjoyed capturing various textures in watercolor, as well as painting shiny and reflective objects and surfaces. In this painting, I feel like I truly captured the essence of this particular place-both the good and the less-than-ideal.” -Steven Kozar
